How To Care For Your Swimwear

Your swimwear is designed to help you feel confident, comfortable, and stylish, whether you are relaxing by the pool, enjoying a beach vacation, or spending the day in the water. However, swimsuits are exposed to chlorine, saltwater, sunscreen, sweat, and other elements that can affect their color, shape, and elasticity over time.

The good news is that with proper care, you can help your favorite bikini, tankini, or one-piece swimsuit stay beautiful and comfortable for many seasons. Follow these simple tips to keep your swimwear looking and feeling its best.

1. Rinse Your Swimwear After Every Use

One of the most important things you can do is rinse your swimsuit as soon as possible after wearing it. Use cool, fresh water to remove chlorine, saltwater, sunscreen, body oils, and sweat.

Even if you did not go swimming, sunscreen and natural body oils can still build up in the fabric. A quick rinse helps prevent these substances from settling into the material and causing discoloration or damage over time.

2. Hand Wash Gently

Whenever possible, hand washing is the best way to clean your swimwear. Fill a sink or basin with cool water and add a small amount of mild detergent designed for delicate fabrics.

Gently move the swimsuit through the water and allow the detergent to clean the fabric. Avoid aggressively rubbing, scrubbing, or twisting the material, especially around delicate straps, seams, and embellishments.

After washing, rinse thoroughly with cool water until all detergent has been removed.

3. Avoid Harsh Chemicals

Swimwear fabrics contain stretchy fibers that can be damaged by harsh cleaning products. Avoid using bleach, strong detergents, fabric softeners, or other aggressive chemicals.

These products can weaken the fibers, cause colors to fade, and reduce the elasticity that helps your swimsuit maintain its shape.

Using a gentle detergent and following the care instructions on your swimsuit label will help protect the fabric and extend the life of your swimwear.

4. Never Wring Out Your Swimsuit

It may be tempting to twist or wring your swimsuit to remove excess water, but this can stretch and damage the fabric.

Instead, gently press the water out of the swimsuit. You can also place it flat on a clean, dry towel, roll the towel gently, and allow the towel to absorb excess moisture.

This method is much gentler on stretchy swimsuit materials and helps preserve the original fit.

5. Dry Your Swimwear Properly

Always allow your swimsuit to air dry naturally. Lay it flat on a clean towel in a shaded, well-ventilated area.

Avoid placing swimwear in a dryer, as high heat can damage elastic fibers and cause the fabric to lose its shape. It is also best to avoid hanging your swimsuit from the straps while it is soaking wet, since the weight of the water may stretch the material.

Direct sunlight should also be avoided for long periods because excessive exposure can cause colors to fade.

6. Be Careful Around Rough Surfaces

Pool edges, rocks, wooden benches, and rough concrete surfaces can snag or wear down swimsuit fabric.

Whenever possible, sit or lie on a towel rather than directly on rough surfaces. This simple habit can help prevent snags, thinning fabric, and unnecessary damage to your favorite swimsuit.

7. Store Your Swimwear Completely Dry

Before putting your swimsuit away, make sure it is completely dry. Storing damp swimwear can lead to unpleasant odors and may damage the fabric.

Keep your swimwear in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Avoid storing it in tightly sealed plastic bags for extended periods, as trapped moisture can create problems.

Taking a few extra minutes to care for your swimwear can make a big difference. By rinsing, washing, drying, and storing your swimsuits properly, you can help preserve their color, stretch, comfort, and overall appearance.

Treat your swimwear with care, and your favorite pieces will be ready to help you look and feel amazing all summer long.
